An infant who was prematurely delivered at 25 weeks, and weighing 520g, is now healthy after being treated in-house for six months at the Castle Street Hospital for Women.
Doctors were also able to save the life of the mother. Head of the Department of Neonatology at the Hospital Dr. Saman Kumara said this task was very challenging, adding that doctors were successful.
The Doctor said an infant is delivered at 38 weeks, with a rough weight of 2.5kg.
Dr. Saman Kumara added developed countries such as the UK and the US would have faced difficulties in accomplishing this feat amidst a pandemic.
