Minister of Trade, Commerce and Food Security Nalin Fernando held a round of discussions with leading steel manufacturers to assess the current issues faced within the industry and to look into the quality of steel in the market.

The steel manufacturers said power cuts and electricity tariffs have become a main concern in the industry.

The Minister requested the Consumer Affairs Authority to conduct raids to inspect the quality of steel in the market and legal action that can be taken against low quality steel manufacturing companies.

The CAA said it is compulsory to indicate the Sri Lanka Standard Institute certification on steel bars.

The Minister instructed the CAA to conduct random visits at steel manufacturing companies every quarter and to compile a report on the findings.

The CAA Chairman meanwhile stated that low-quality steel manufacturing companies have been warned in writing by the Director General of Sri Lanka Standards Institute.
