The Public Utilities Commission of Sri Lanka says power cuts have only been approved until today, the 30th of November.

Chairman of the PUCSL Janaka Ratnayake issued a statement in reference to a statement by Minister of Power and Energy Kanchana Wijesekera related to the power demand management.

Accordingly, the PUCSL informed that the Ceylon Electricity Board has been granted approval by the PUCSL to impose power cuts only until today (30).

Ratnayake noted that no approval has been granted yet for power cuts beyond today.

Furthermore, the PUCSL said a CEB request to impose three hour power cuts on the 25th of November was rejected by the PUCSL and approval was instead granted only for two hour and 20 minute disruptions.

Earlier today, Minister Wijesekera said island wide power cuts of one hour during the day and on hour 20 minutes at night will continue until the 15th of December.

The Minister said the Southern and Ella tourism zones will be exempt from the one hour 20 minute night time power cut from the 1st of December.

Furthermore, Minister Wijesekera said with the addition of the third generator of the Norochcholai Coal Power Plant to the National Power Grid on the 15th of  December, all tourism zones will be exempt from power cuts at night while island wide night power cuts will be reduced to one hour.

Meanwhile, he noted that power cuts will not be imposed during Christmas and New Year.
