Consultant Judicial Medical Officer Dr. Channa Perera says several factors led to the issuance of the circular stating that performing post-mortem PCR is not mandatory for all deaths, hospital or non-hospital.
Speaking to media in Colombo Dr. Perera said the main reason was the difficulties faced by relatives of the deceased as a result of conducting post-mortem PCR for all deaths.
He noted the relevant circular was issued on the 15th of February by the Director General of Health Services.
Dr. Channa Perera said accordingly post-mortem PCR tests are not conducted for all deaths, since yesterday.
He stated post-mortem PCR can be performed at the discretion of the relevant Judicial Medical Officer.
