An experiment conducted by the Sri Lanka Police using Police canines has been successful in accurately identifying locations where water with mosquito larvae is present.
Police said two dogs attached to the Kandy Police Kennels Division had successfully completed the training.
Police Media Spokesman Senior DIG Ajith Rohana said the dogs will assist in future operations conducted by the Police Environmental Division.
Senior DIG Rohana said K9 assistance has been used for Police investigations for a long period of time for tasks including criminal investigations, identifying suspects, locating explosives and narcotics.
The Police Media Spokesman said the attention was directed to identify locations which have not been maintained which as a result spread various diseases including mosquito-borne diseases.
He said K9 Jonny and K9 Roma were trained in this task.
Senior DIG Rohana said further similar training programmes are scheduled to be carried out.
