Police have fired tear gas and water cannons to disperse a group of protesters in Colombo.
NewsRadio correspondent said tear gas and water cannons were fired adjacent to the Faculty of Aesthetic Studies of the University of Colombo.
Tear gas was also fired at a group of protesters at Duplication Road, Colpetty. Heavy traffic congestion has been reported in Colombo and surrounding areas owing to protests in Colombo today (16).
Earlier today, the Colombo Fort Magistrate issued a restraining order on the request of the Police preventing the IUSF from entering Galle face.
However, Court granted consent for the protesters to engage in peaceful protests.
The protest is being staged by the Inter University Students Federation demanding the release of its Convenor Wasantha Mudalige, and against the cost of living, rising electricity tariffs, gas and fuel prices, tax burdens, release of student activists and the abolition of the Prevention of Terrorism Act.
