Prime Minister Dinesh Gunawardena says instructions have been issued to relevant officials to intervene in the payment of pensions especially when pensioners are hospitalised over serious illnesses.
The Prime Minister said a committee comprising three State Ministers has been appointed to investigate the rights and concessions of pensioners and to report any issues especially matters that are not being addressed.
The Premier also stated that during an inspection of the pensioners’ retirement resort in Kelaniya, he observed that necessary benefits should be granted.
The Prime Minister expressed his views in response to a question raised by MP Madura Withanage in Parliament.
Prime Minister Gunawardena said despite being amidst a financial crisis, the government will complete pension payments this month.
