Prime Minister Dinesh Gunawardena has expressed his gratitude to the Australia government for the support rendered to Sri Lanka to strengthen maritime security in the Indian Ocean region.

Australian High Commissioner to Sri Lanka Paul Stephens called on the Prime Minister yesterday (4).

During the discussion the Premier said, steps are being taken to strengthen communication networks related to the fishing industry, and requested support to provide GPS facilities.

The Prime Minister also stated that more universities affiliated to Australian universities can be established in Sri Lanka to attract local and foreign students from countries in Asia, the Middle East and Africa.

The Prime Minister also expressed his appreciation to the Australia government for providing medicines and essential materials worth AUD 75 million.

High Commissioner Stevens meanwhile assured his continued support to Sri Lanka in negotiations with the International Monetary Fund and Paris Society meetings.
