The Public Health Inspector’s Union of Sri Lanka expresses its displeasure over the government’s decision to permit the reopening of liquor stores during the quarantine curfew period.
The PHI Union said large crowds gathering near stores pose a huge impact on COVID-19 mitigation efforts.
Commenting on the situation, Chairman of the Union Upul Rohana said the government has caused great injustice to the owners of retail outlets by only allowing liquor stores to open which are not an essential service.
Rohana said the public completely disregarded health rules and regulations by gathering at liquor outlets.
He said this is an unfortunate situation adding Public Health Inspectors island wide have been raising concerns pertaining to the situation.
Rohana said traders’ associations have also raised concerns over the matter and have queried with PHIs, where certain instances had turned hostile.
