12 students arrested for assaulting the former Vice Chancellor of the Peradeniya University Prof. Athula Senaratne and his son have been further remanded.
The 12 youth were remanded till the 4th of January by Kandy Chief Magistrate Shrinith WIjesekera today (22).
Officers of the Criminal Investigation Department informed that preliminary investigations into the incident have not concluded and therefore the Chief Magistrate ordered that the students be further remanded.
The 12 youth were also produced at an identification parade today, while six students were identified by the former Vice Chancellor, his son, and four others.
Charges have been filed against the suspects under the Public Properties Act.
The group was arrested based on a complaint lodged with the Peradeniya Police following the incident.
Police said the Peradeniya Police received a tip-off of a protest by a group of university students on Saturday night (10), surrounding the residence of the Prof. Athula Senaratne.
The OIC of the Peradeniya Police, the Deputy Vice Chancellor, and university disciplinarians explained matters to around 300 protesting students to disperse them.
The students claimed that the son of the former Vice Chancellor had collided with two vehicles belonging to university students leading to the unrest.
Accordingly, Police have launched investigations to determine the facts behind the reported accident.
The son of the former Vice Chancellor was admitted to a private hospital after being assaulted by students while Prof. Senaratne was also admitted citing that he too was assaulted and sustained injuries.
The three vehicles reportedly involved in the accident have been seized by Police.
