The National People’s Power charges that a country in which people are fearing for their lives has been created due to incorrect decisions reached by the government, to mitigate the COVID-19 pandemic.

Speaking during a media briefing in Colombo former Parliamentarian Bimal Rathnayake said the people are facing the consequences of government decisions, by disregarding warnings issued by health authorities from the start.

Rathnayake said health officials including PHI, specialists and nurses repeatedly warned the number of persons succumbing to COVID-19 will increase and provided statistics as well.

He claimed families that were happy a week ago have lost family members.

Rathnayake said the number of deaths reported daily which was between 40-60, has now increased by three to four fold and is at 198 at present. He claimed the people now fear for their lives.

Commenting on President Gotabaya Rajapaksa’s address to the nation claiming the people must be prepared to make sacrifices if the country is closed continuously, Bimal Rathnayake questioned what economy collapses due to the country being closed for 10 days.

He questioned who is responsible for creating an economy that will collapse and force people to make sacrifices and for salaries to be slashed, if the country is closed for 10 days, even during a natural disaster.

He added the Rajapaksa regime led the country for 12 years, during the past 20 years, and claimed members of the Rajapaksa family held the Finance and Economic Ministerial portfolios during the time.

Rathnayake claimed individuals who are responsible for the current weak state of the economy are now threatening the public that they will have to make sacrifices if the country is closed.
