Sri Lanka Podujana Peramuna Parliamentarian Dilan Perera has requested the Speaker of House to appoint a Parliamentary Select Committee to make necessary proposals to avoid a constitutional and economic crisis.
Speaking during the final day of the two-day Parliamentary debate on the present crisis, MP Perera said the Select Committee should be provided five days to submit proposals to seek short, mid, and long-term solutions.
Joining the debate MP Patali Champika Ranawaka said the public has realised that a major robbery has occurred in the country.
MP Ranawaka said USD 19 billion was illegally taken out during 2014-2015.
The Parliamentarian said as a result the public is calling for those responsible for the crime to be brought before the law and are taking to streets chanting “Go Home Gota” and “Go Home Rajapaksa’s”.
Meanwhile, MP Vasudeva Nanayakkara claimed the system of governance is in need of a change instead of ousting Prime Minister Mahinda Rajapaksa.
MP Nanayakkara claimed replacing President Gotabaya Rajapaksa will result in the country losing its centre of power.
MP Rohini Kumari Wijerathna meanwhile said a new Prime Minister must be appointed adding former Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe, MPs Sajith Premadasa, Mano Ganesan and Rauff Hakeem must unite to reach a decision on selecting a suitable individual.
Furthermore, MP Mahinda Amaraweera said the country is facing an economic and political crisis adding everyone must strive to seek solutions instead of attempting to make personal gains.
MP Amaraweera said youth who are yet to cast their vote have taken to streets.
The MP said such individuals must be saved from potentially violent situations.
MP Manusha Nanayakkara meanwhile said the public taking to the streets in Colombo on the 9th of April have no intention of leaving until solutions are provided.
MP Nanayakkara called for the Constitution to be amended and the Executive Presidency to be abolished.
He urged the President to resign instead of creating a similar situation to that in Libya and Syria.
