Parents have been urged to minimise outside contact and prevent children from being exposed to outsiders due to the rapid spread of the novel coronavirus.
The number of daily infections and cases has seen a sharp increase in recent days following the detection of the Delta coronavirus variant in the country.
Speaking to media, Respiratory Diseases Specialist attached to the Lady Ridgeway Hospital for Children Dr. Channa Perera said children should not be exposed to outsiders during the current climate.
He said due to the increase in coronavirus infections, children are also at risk.
Dr. Channa Perera noted children are less likely to get a severe bout of COVID-19 due to the natural immunity and organs and structures of the children.
He said although children are likely to get mild symptoms, due to the surge in numbers more infections will be recorded.
Dr. Channa Perera therefore requested parents to fulfil their responsibilities and prevent children from being exposed to the virus.
He said it is important that all safety precautions are taken when leaving for essential work.
Meanwhile, Consultant Paediatrician Dr. Deepal Perera said infected children who are asymptomatic can be treated at home.
Dr. Perera said those below two years however should receive treatment at hospitals.
Dr. Perera noted that if there are infected individual at home, such persons should wear face mask at all times.
Dr. Perera said paracetamol must only be given to infected persons as prescribed and noted other pain killers and medicines should not be administered to children.
Consultant Paediatrician Dr. Deepal Perera said providing a healthy meal with nutrients, liquids, greens and grains will help infected persons and children a better immunity and the ability to recover faster.
He said therefore the public should continue to adhere to health guidelines issued by experts periodically.
