Election monitoring body the People’s Action for a Free and Fair Election has written to the Chairman of the Election Commission pertaining to the misuse of resources of local government bodies.
PAFFREL in its letter stated that since the announcement pertaining to the Local Government Election, complaints have been lodged over heads of local government bodies using state vehicles, development projects, openings and welfare projects of local government bodies for the promotion of political parties and candidates.
The organisation acknowledged that technically while the officials are not candidates yet, they will most likely be accepted as candidates at the upcoming election.
PAFFREL also noted that it is likely that such persons will continue to misuse state resources and property of the institutions until the election.
Therefore, the election monitors requested the Election Commission to take steps to prevent such incidents from occurring.
PAFFREL accordingly requested the Election Commission to control the prevalent situation by informing Local Government Secretaries, Municipal Commissioners and Local Government Commissioners to prevent the use of resources and property owned by local government bodies.
