Election watchdog, the People’s Action for Free and Fair Election is studying the possibility of taking legal action against the continued postponement of the Provincial Council elections.
Speaking to NewsRadio, Executive Director of PAFFREL Rohana Hettiarachchi said neither the previous administration nor the current government paid much attention to conducting the provincial council elections.
Therefore, Rohana Hettiarachchi called on the government to take steps to hold the Provincial Council elections expeditiously.
He said since the election has been delayed for nearly four years, Provincial Council functions are conducted through respective governors.
Rohana Hettiarachchi noted although the present government made political statements pertaining to conducting the election, no steps have been taken legally or legislatively to conduct the election.
He said the delimitation issue is also one of the main reasons for the delay in elections.
Executive Director of PAFFREL Rohana Hettiarachchi noted they are looking at the possibility of seeking legal action as they have not observed any meaningful attempt to conduct the delayed Provincial Council elections.
