The Ministry of Agriculture says the government’s paddy purchasing process has come to a halt due to the failure to stringently allocate finances.
Secretary of the Ministry Rohana Pushpakumara said despite the government informing banks to provide the necessary funds for the purchase of paddy, the ongoing financial crisis has led to the funds not being issued.
Pushpakumara said due to this development, the government has brought to a halt paddy purchasing.
Meanwhile, the National Govijana Collective said the harvest will not be reaped in abundance if the fertiliser required for paddy farming is not provided.
Chairman Anuradha Tennakoon said as a result rice will have to be imported next year as well.
