The opposition says the general public should not be surprised if a kilogram of sugar is sold in the market for Rs.300 to Rs. 400 in future.

Speaking during a media briefing in Colombo today, Parliamentarian Thushara Indunil Amarasena said businessmen affiliated to the government have already imported adequate stocks of Sugar after the present administration reduced the import levy to 25 cents.

MP Amarasena said now, the government has allowed such businessmen to sell their stocks at prices they deem fit.

He said not only sugar but prices of several goods have increased steeply since major businessmen are controlling the government at present.

On a separate note, Parliamentarian Thushara Indunil Amarasena said the government should formulate a new programme to handle the coronavirus crisis.

He said the opposition will also extend its fullest support to the government for the initiative.

MP Amarasena said 6.9 million people voted for the government in hope of safeguarding the country from external powers and now the very same group is fighting for its dear lives.

He said citizens are only asking the government to protect their lives.

The Parliamentarian said it is the duty of the government to safeguard the lives of the citizens.

He said everyone in the country other than close affiliates are of the view that the present administration has been a failure but noted that they cannot allow the country to fail.

MP Thushara Amarasena said the government should at least now set aside its failed policies and formulate a programme with the inputs of the experts.
