Parliamentarian JC Alawathuwala says they have lodged a complaint with the Inspector General of Police demanding the arrest of State Minister Lohan Ratwatte and urging Police to conduct an investigation over the recent incidents reported from the Welikada and Anuradhapura prisons.
Speaking during a media briefing in Colombo today, MP Alawathuwala said action must also be taken against prisons officials who allowed State Minister Ratwatte to enter the prison premises and behave in a disorderly manner.
MP Alawathuwala said State Minister Ratwatte resigning from one of his portfolios is insufficient.
He said although State Minister Ratwatte has relinquished his duties related to Prisons, he has retained all powers and privileges since he remains a State Minister overseeing a separate portfolio.
Parliamentarian JC Alawathuwala said the Minister-in-charge of the Police Department and the IGP had claimed that they have not received a complaint regarding the matter.
He said during the past, Police had hunted down and interrogated individuals without any complaints for merely posting and expressing their views on social media.
The Parliamentarian said the ‘one country one law’ concept is not enforced in the country at present since those who are affiliated and all powerful can get away even after committing offences in public.
