Samagi Jana Balawegaya Parliamentarian Patali Champika Ranawaka says the price of a litre of nano urea is USD 6 while according to the current agreements approximately USD 25 is spent per litre.
MP Ranawaka speaking in Parliament during a discussion on chemical fertiliser said those involved in the procurement process must be held responsible.
Joining the debate Parliamentarian Shanakiyan Rasamanickam questioned the government’s claim of compensating farmers who face loses.
He questioned if the government will be using personal funds, funds of the Sri Lanka Podujana Peramuna or funds paid through the country’s money.
He said even if the farming community is compensated, a food shortage will be prevalent.
Commenting on the Chinese ship containing fertiliser, JVP MP Vijitha Herath said the government is making various claims that the vessel will not be allowed into the country adding however they previously claimed the research cannot be accepted.
He said the Chinese Embassy in Sri Lanka stands firm with the Chinese firm adding however the subject Minister did not vouch for the Quarantine Department.
