The opposition has questioned the basis on which the government has classified 623 items essential for public life, under the non-essential category.
Speaking to media in Kandy, Parliamentarian Velu Kumar said it was humorous that the government classified smartphones, computers and stationery as non-essential, especially at a time when school children, office employees and university students are forced to work from home.
He added government officials had no common sense to include necessities such as undergarments in the non-essential list along with many other items which help people work from home.
