The Supreme Court has ordered two petitions requesting an order to be issued for the prompt conduct of the Local Government Election, to be taken up for consideration on the 18th of January 2023.

The petitions were filed by the Samagi Jana Balawegaya, the Sri Lanka Freedom Party, the Tamil National Alliance, the Freedom Lanka Council and several independent MPs on Monday (12).

The petitions were submitted by MPs Ranjith Madduma Bandara, Lakshman Kiriella, Anura Priyadarshana Yapa, GL Peiris, MA Sumanthiran and Dayasiri Jayasekera.

The petitions were taken up yesterday (16) before justices Priyantha Jayawardena, Kumuduni Wickramasinghe and Achala Wengappuli.

Court ordered the petitioners to issue notice to the respondents cited in the petition including the Chairman of the National Election Commission and its members and the Prime Minister to table facts.

The petitioners charge that while the Local Government Election can be held in the first quarter of 2023, efforts are underway to delay the conduct of the election thereby violating the public’s right to vote.
