The Samagi Jana Balawegaya claims only a new administration can solve the crises in the country.

Speaking during a media briefing this morning, Chief Opposition Whip Parliamentarian Lakshman Kiriella said these issues cannot be resolved by mere changes in Ministerial portfolios.

MP Kiriella questioned how the government can function while one group is in favour of President Gotabaya Rajapaksa remaining in office while others are calling for Prime Minister Mahinda Rajapaksa.

The Parliamentarian said no international organisation will be willing to assist the present administration due to the prevailing political instability.

The MP said the International Monetary Fund will only intervene and provide assistance in the event that the government receives an extension on debt repayments from all creditors.

He said however the IMF will also look into whether the country is able to repay the debt after providing assistance adding prices of all items and services will increase by 40 percent once IMF assistance is received.

MP Kiriella said while all countries obtain loans, they make investments and pay off debt through profits.

He said in the event a new government is formed the public will allow the administration to take necessary action while international communities will also be inclined to deal with the new administration.

On a separate note, MP Lakshman Kiriella said a leading government Minister during yesterday’s Party Leaders’ meeting claimed gas stocks will not arrive for another month.

He said even though the Speaker of the House calls for solutions to be provided from within the Parliament such actions cannot go through due to the President being vested with Parliamentary authority.

The MP said the root cause of all prevailing issues arose due to the President being vested with Parliamentary authority through the 20th Amendment to the Constitution.

He said however the same MPs who voted in favour of the 20th Amendment are now attempting to reinstate the 19th Amendment.

The MP said not only government but the public too are facing destruction.

MP Kiriella said individuals who tabled the ‘Vistas of Prosperity and Splendour’ policy statement have forced the country to beg for aid.

He said Sri Lanka was the only nation to face depletion of foreign reserves during the COVID-19 pandemic whereas all other countries except for Afghanistan experienced a 25-30 percent growth in foreign reserves.
