COLOMBO (NewsRadio); Chairman of the National Election Commission Nimal Punchihewa has reiterated his calls for the conduct of elections in a timely manner.

Speaking during an event in Gampaha, Elections Chief Punchihewa said the Commission is not in favour of delaying elections based on delimitation issues.

He has said the powers vested with public representatives in local government bodies cannot be handed over to unelected officials.

Nimal Punchihewa said the delimitation committee cannot be used to delay elections.

The National Election Commission has already announced that it will call for nominations shortly for the impending Local Authorities Election.

The opposition has also been demanding authorities to call for election despite the country dealing with an economic crisis.
