The Sri Lanka Railway Station Masters’ Association claims a train fare revision should not be enforced at this time.
The Association’s representatives said approving such a price hike is unethical at a time when many facilities in the service must be met.
Speaking to media in Colombo today, President of the Association Sumedha Somaratne said they received reports that the Cabinet of Ministers had granted approval to the proposal tabled by the Sri Lanka Railways General Manager to revise train fares considering the local diesel prices.
Somaratne said they vehemently oppose the decision adding the public will further lose faith in the government.
He urged the President and the Minister of Transport to refrain from revising train fares.
Somaratne said they already informed the Minister on ways that the Railways Department can earn revenue through cargo transportation and leasing land belonging to Sri Lanka Railways.
