Parliamentarian Rohitha Abeygunawardena says Parliament should support President Ranil Wickremesinghe to solve the current issues face by the country.
Speaking during the three-day adjournment debate in Parliament on President’s Policy Statement delivered last week, MP Abeygunawardena said the President has taken the responsibility to address the pressing issues of the country at a time when several so-called leaders backed away.
He said protesters few months ago demanded the resignation of former President Gotabaya Rajapaksa with the slogan GotaGoHome.
He said at the time, no one demanded the resignation of former Prime Minister Mahinda Rajapaksa.
MP Abeygunawardena said however the former Prime Minister decided to step down from him post.
He said following the resignation, former President Gotabaya Rajapaksa requested the likes of Sajith Premadasa, Anura Kumara Dissanayake and Sarath Fonseka to take up the responsibility of addressing the issues in the country.
He said the former President who received the backing of 6.9 million people and who had a two thirds majority in Parliament allowed his own brother to resign and then requested his political opponents to take up the Prime Ministerial post.
The Parliamentarian said however no one was willing to take up the responsibility and provide stability to the country.
MP Rohitha Abeygunawardena said although some so-called leaders continue to make statements, they are not willing to take up any responsibility when the country is going through difficulties.
He said however the incumbent President Ranil Wickremesinghe took up the responsibility when the people were seeking for leaders to provide solutions.
MP Abeygunawardena said therefore Parliament should support the President’s programme and provide relief to the people.
