Speaker of House Mahinda Yapa Abeywardena has informed that the process of nominating three civil representatives to the Constitutional Council has been postponed without an agreement reached.
The Constituent Council established under the 21st Amendment to the Constitution has 10 members while three members are citizens and must be nominated with the consent of the Prime Minister and the Leader of the Opposition.
A discussion was held today (29) at the Parliament complex under the patronage of Speaker Mahinda Yapa Abeywardena to reach a final decision in this regard.
However, the discussion ended in a stalemate.
New members to independent commissions including the National Election Commission are appointed following the appointment of the three civil representatives of the Constitutional Council.
