COLOMBO (NewsRadio); The Department of Animal Production and Health has refused to grant permission to import eggs from India citing concerns over prevalent Avian influenza or bird flu cases.

Director-General of the Department Dr. Hemali Kothalawala said based on the evidence they have received, they cannot grant permission to import eggs from India.

She said the decision has been conveyed to the Sri Lanka State Trading Corporation as well.

Dr. Hemali Kothalawala noted that according to the report by a Committee of Experts, since 2006, bird flu cases have been surfaced time to time.

She said the bird flu outbreak declared in Kerala, India on 16th of October 2022 is still active.

Dr. Hemali Kothalawala said therefore the decision has been taken considering all factors presented to them.

The Ministry of Trade decided to import eggs considering the shortage in the local market and hike in prices.
