The government has reiterated that it has not taken a final decision to increase prices of essential commodities such as wheat flour and powdered milk.
Speaking during the weekly Cabinet media briefing in Colombo today, Co-Cabinet Spokesman Minister Ramesh Pathirana said the government will take decisions considering prevalent prices in the world market.
Minister Pathirana said there is a supply-demand issue due to an increase in prices of goods in the world market and owing to the weakening of the Rupee.
He said in recent months, a gas company requested from the government to increase the price of a domestic LPG cylinder. He said since the request was denied, there was a shortage in the market.
Minister Ramesh Pathirana said the government is not willing to inconvenience the public by creating unnecessary shortages.
He said they are hoping to take appropriate decisions based on all factors.
Minister Ramesh Pathirana noted however they have not taken a final decision on increasing prices of wheat flour, powdered milk and cement.
