A discussion was held today (19) under the patronage of Minister of Justice Wijeyadasa Rajapakshe on raising awareness among non-governmental organisations over the proposed amendments to the Anti Corruption Act.
The Minister informed the institutions of the new bill, while representatives of NGOs presented views and suggestions to prevent fraud and corruption.
The Justice Ministry said the new Act has been compiled on the basis of the United Nations Charter against Corruption.
Secretary of the Justice Ministry Wasantha Perera, former Director General of the Commission to Investigate Allegations of Bribery or Corruption President’s Counsel Sarath Jayamanna, Additional Secretary (Legal) of the Justice Ministry Piyumanthi Peiris, and representatives of the National Movement for a Just Society, the Organization of Professional Associations of Sri Lanka, Transparency International and the Centre for Policy Alternatives, the Justice Ministry, the Attorney General’s Department, the Legal Draftsman’s Department, and the Bribery or Corruption Commission were present at the discussion.
The draft bill has been compiled by an expert committee including Sarath Jayamanna, and has been submitted to the Cabinet of Ministers.
