COLOMBO (NewsRadio); The appointment of members to independent commissions is expected to be completed in the coming week.
Speaker of House Mahinda Yapa Abeywardena who is the chair of the Constitutional Council said names of the new members for all independent commissions are expected to be finalized by the 10-member body in the next few days.
Despite calling for applications from the public several weeks ago, the Constitutional Council has yet to agree on the names for commissions.
The Constitutional Council called for applications from the public for the appointment as Members of the independent commissions specified in Schedule to Article 41B of the Constitution.
The Council then met on a number of occasions to decide on the members but failed to reach consensus.
The Constitutional Council was reconstituted following the enactment of the 21st Amendment to the Constitution.
The Constitutional Council is the responsible body to appoint members to independent commissions such as the Finance Commission, the Procurement Commission, the Audit Commission, the Commission to Investigate Allegations of Bribery or Corruption, the National Police Commission, the Judicial Service Commission, the Public Service Commission and the Human Rights Commission.
The Speaker holds the chairmanship of the Council while the Prime Minister and Opposition Leader are ex-officio members of the 10-member Constitutional Council.
The Council consists of seven Members of Parliament and three civil representatives.
