Minister Wimal Weerawansa says the US firm, New Fortress, has the right to impose international sanctions on Sri Lanka in the event any inconvenience is caused to the company according to the controversial Yugadanavi Power Plant agreement.
Minister Weerawansa made this revelation during a meeting of the people’s council today with the participation of 11 government affiliated parties, in Eheliyagoda.
The event was named, ‘Yugadanavi Agreement, Transparency of the Government and the Cost of Living’.
Speaking during the event, Minister Weerawansa said the contradictions pertaining to the agreement will be further discussed during the meeting of the Cabinet of Ministers.
The Minister claimed they pointed out the risk of sanctions being imposed by the United States, the United Kingdom and the European Union through their observations.
He said the Cabinet Paper tabled in this regard stated the agreement will be submitted for Cabinet approval after the Secretary of the Ministry of Finance signs the agreement adding however it was submitted merely for their information.
Minister Weerawansa said the issue must not be used for narrow political advantages and instead a positive solution must be sought.
