COLOMBO (NewsRadio); Cabinet Spokesman Minister Bandula Gunawardena says the amended electricity tariffs will be effective from the 1st of January.

Speaking during a media briefing at the Department of Government Information this morning, Minister Bandula Gunawardena said according to the proposal presented by the Minister of Power and Energy, new tariffs will be applicable from the 1st of January.

The Minister said although the revisions have been tabled, further discussions will be held with the Public Utilities Commission of Sri Lanka pertaining to the matter.

He said PUCSL and other bodies have been given time till the 15th of January to provide alternative proposals.

The Minister added that the revision comes on the premise that the Ceylon Electricity Board will provide uninterrupted power supply.

Minister Bandula Gunawardena added that if prices of coal or oil reduces in the world market, that benefit should also be given to the people by reducing the electricity tariffs.

He said the Cabinet also informed the Subject Minister to factor in the rainfall when revising tariffs.

According to the proposal, electricity tariffs will be revised once every six months based on the fuel pricing formula.
