President Ranil Wickremesinghe says his goal is to prepare a governance structure with fair representation for all political parties.
The President expressed his views during a discussion with several parties at the Presidential Secretariat yesterday (10) pertaining to the formation of an all-party government.
The President’s Media Division said the All Ceylon Makkal Congress led by MP Rishad Bathiudeen, the independent group including MP Anura Priyadarshana Yapa, the Sri Lanka Muslim Congress led by MP Rauff Hakeem, the Tamil People’s National Alliance led by MP CV Vigneswaran and the Tamil Progressive Alliance led by MP Mano Ganesan attended the talks.
President Wickremesinghe said Parliament Oversight Committees are currently being formed adding that the need to establish several interim committees has also been identified.
The Head of State added the main objective is to establish a national council claiming that the representation of all parties and alliances is essential for this purpose.
President Wickremesinghe said it is crucial to grant equal power and representation for all committee chairmen similar to the Cabinet of Ministers and to involve them during Cabinet meetings when needed.
The President also requested political parties to inform him of their willingness to represent the committee system or be a part of the government.
Meanwhile, amidst non-functioning Provincial Councils, the responsibility of maintaining provincial administration and development efforts including managing expenses of Provincial Councils has been vested with Governors.
Secretary to the President Saman Ekanayake informed Governors in this regard in writing of the directives issued by the President.
Accordingly, it was informed that a round of discussions must be held with Parliamentarians of respective provinces every two weeks and to continue a dialogue on development activities implemented via Provincial Councils.
The Secretary to the President added that President Ranil Wickremesinghe has directed attention to the contribution of Governors in achieving national goals during this trying period.
