COLOMBO (NewsRadio); The National Election Commission says it will hold elections in a way that will ensure that Local Government Bodies will be able to hold their new sessions on or before the 20th of March 2023.
Commissioner-General of Election Saman Sri Ratnayake said they will conduct the Local Authorities Election to ensure that names of new councilors can be gazette before the 20th of March.
Saman Sri Ratnayake noted that the commission has necessary legal powers to hold the election.
Meanwhile, former Chairman of the National Election Commission Mahinda Deshapriya said despite the appointment of a national delimitation committee on demarcation of wards for local authorities, the election can be held before the 20th of March 2023.
Sri Lanka has 341 local government bodies at present.
The terms of the local government bodies were extended by one year by the previous administration earlier this year.
