The Public Health Inspector’s Union of Sri Lanka says extending curfew for lengthy periods will not be beneficial, if authorities fail to prevent vehicles and people taking to the street unnecessarily.

Speaking to media, Chairman of the PHI Union Upul Rohana said Police have a major responsibility in this regard.

He said during the past week, the enforcement of quarantine regulations and the travel ban has been weak.

Upul Rohana said the public has been disregarding curfew regulations despite high coronavirus infection rates, which is problematic.

He said they observed a large number of persons on main and byroads for non-essential purposes.

The PHI Chairman said although a permit issuing mechanism is in place through Divisional Secretaries, there are others who misuse the provisions granted to groups of people engaged in essential services to travel outdoors without a permit.

Upul Rohana claimed some delivery drivers are on roads at all times, even though they are not delivering food items or other services.

He said the Police must take necessary action to control the flow of people.

Upul Rohana noted the support of the public is paramount in containing the spread of the coronavirus.

Yesterday, the government extended the on-going island-wide quarantine curfew until 4am on the 21st of September.
