Former President Chairman of the Sri Lanka Freedom Party Maithripala Sirisena has commended other political parties who refrained from joining the National Council.
The Sri Lanka Freedom Party issuing a statement said the formation of the National Council is a move to create a false image before the international community of political stability in the country by creating an all-party government, and charged that the Council is a namesake establishment that will not serve justice to the difficulties faced by the public.
The SLFP stated that the National Council aims to obtain the approval of all parties representing Parliament for decisions reached by the government.
Accordingly, the Chairman of the SLFP said the party decided not to be a part of the Council and will instead work from within the opposition to support positive policy decisions reached by the government.
The SLFP statement noted that the formation of a National Council must be debated and approved prior to being added to the Parliament agenda.
