Members of Parliament of the Samagi Jana Balawegaya have decided to donate their monthly salaries to the party fund to purchase necessary equipment amidst the prevailing COVID-19 situation.

A decision was reached to donate the salaries to a fund established by the party.

Speaking to NewsRadio, Parliamentarian Tissa Attanayake said the funds will be used to purchase pulse oximeters and other necessary equipment.

A discussion was held last evening to obtain the views of all party members in this regard. Decisions reached during the meeting will be announced in future.

Meanwhile, commenting on the imposition of quarantine curfew and the current COVID-19 situation, MP Attanayake said the government lacks a stringent programme for the future.

MP Tissa Attanayake said the country and the people have made several sacrifices adding that Sri Lanka is now facing a financial crisis while the cost of living is also rising.

The MP questioned if the government has a national programme to overcome the prevailing crisis.

He added the public has not been informed of measures that will be taken to overcome the crisis.

MP Attanayake requested the government to consider the matter a national issue and safeguard the people’s lives.

He claimed the people’s lives cannot be sacrificed to build the country or economy.

The MP noted people’s right to life must be prioritized.
