COLOMBO (NewsRadio); The SSP of the Monaragala Police Division who was arrested for being in possession of a stock of cannabis has been interdicted.
The Police Media Division said the SSP has been interdicted with immediate effect.
He has been interdicted by the Inspector General of Police following approval by the National Police Commission.
Court previously granted permission to the Criminal Investigation Department to detain and question the SSP of the Monaragala Police Division who was arrested for the possession of around 650 cannabis plants.
The Monaragala Magistrate’s Court also granted permission to detain five others arrested over the incident for questioning until today.
Based on a tip-off, Police Special Task Force personnel on the 9th of January arrested the SSP of Monaragala after they found around 650 cannabis plants at his official residence.
Police Media Spokesman SSP Nihal Thalduwa said officers also seized a metal detector and a jeep suspected to have been used to carry out illegal activities.
In addition to the SSP, a Police Sergeant and four civilians were also arrested in connection with the incident.
Investigations in relation to the incident have been handed over to the CID following instructions by the Inspector General of Police.
Meanwhile, earlier today Police said the Officer-In-Charge of the Ethimale Police Station was also arrested in relation to the incident.
He has been arrested based on information revealed by suspects currently in custody.
