COLOMBO (NewsRadio); The SSP of the Monaragala Police Division who was arrested for being in possession of a stock of cannabis has been remanded till the 24th of January.
The Monaragala Magistrate ordered five others also be remanded till the 24th of January.
Court previously granted permission to the Criminal Investigation Department to detain and question the SSP of the Monaragala Police Division and four others who were arrested for the possession of around 650 cannabis plants.
Based on a tip-off, Police Special Task Force personnel on the 9th of January arrested the SSP of Monaragala after they found around 650 cannabis plants at his official residence.
Police Media Spokesman SSP Nihal Thalduwa said officers also seized a metal detector and a jeep suspected to have been used to carry out illegal activities.
In addition to the SSP, a Police Sergeant and four civilians were also arrested in connection with the incident.
Meanwhile, yesterday Police said the Officer-In-Charge of the Ethimale Police Station was also arrested in relation to the incident.
He was been arrested based on information revealed by suspects currently in custody.
Investigations in relation to the incident have been handed over to the CID following instructions by the Inspector General of Police.
The SSP of the Monaragala Police Division who was arrested for being in possession of a stock of cannabis was interdicted yesterday.
He was interdicted by the Inspector General of Police following approval by the National Police Commission.
