May 9 Violence: Former PC Member Amal Silva arrested

Former Provincial Council Member Amal Silva and an employee of the Moratuwa Municipal Council have been arrested over violence reported in Colombo on the 9th of May.

Former Provincial Council Member Amal Silva and an employee of the Moratuwa Municipal Council have been arrested over violence reported in Colombo on the 9th of May.

They are due to be produced before courts.

Yesterday, the Attorney General instructed Inspector General of Police CD Wickramaratne to record statements and arrest 22 individuals, including former Ministers, in connection with the attack on protesters at Galle Face and opposite the Temple Trees on the 9th of May.

The group includes Parliamentarians Johnston Fernando, Sanath Nishantha, Milan Jayathilake and Sanjeeva Edirimanna, Senior DIG-Western Province Deshabandu Tennakoon, Moratuwa Mayor Saman Lal Fernando, Mahinda Kahandagama and Dan Priyasad.

The Attorney General’s Department said an extract of its investigations into the incidents has also been submitted to the Criminal Investigation Department.
