The father of a coronavirus infected person who reportedly spat at a Public Health Inspector attached to the Narammala Medical Officer of Health has been arrested in Giriulla.
Police Media Spokesman Senior DIG Ajith Rohana said the suspect was arrested under the charge of obstructing duties of a government employee. Police said the PHI had visited a residence in Puskoladeniya, Giriulla to carry out his duties following reports of a suspected coronavirus infected individual.
Senior DIG Rohana said it is reported that the father of the suspected patient had attempted to assault the PHI and had spat at him when the PHI entered the house. The Giriulla Police has arrested the 48-year-old suspect after conducting an investigation into the incident. The Police Media Spokesman said the suspect was under the influence at the time of the incident. The suspect will be produced before the Kuliyapitiya Magistrate’s Court. Senior DIG Rohana said a similar incident was reported in Atulugama, Bandaragama on the 02nd of December last year where the suspect was given a sentence of six years by the Panadura Magistrate’s Court. The Police Media Spokesman said state sector employees and health sector officials are carrying out duties for the benefit of the public adding the Police will take stern legal action against individuals obstructing these duties. The Giriulla Police is conducting further investigations into the incident.
