COLOMBO (NewsRadio); Police say a majority of shootings reported this year are from the Southern and Western Provinces.

Speaking during a media briefing in Colombo today, Police Media Spokesman SSP Nihal Thalduwa said 26 shootings in total have been reported this year so far.

A total of 19 persons have died and five others have sustained injuries in the shooting incidents.

SSP Thalduwa said only two shootings have been reported from areas outside the Southern and Western Provinces this year.

He said several steps have been taken to minimize shootings.

The Police Media Spokesman despite efforts of police and other law enforcement agencies, shootings are being reported frequently.

He said a majority of those shootings are carried out by drug peddlers and organized criminals.
