Parliamentarian Patali Champika Ranawaka says disregarding the energy sector will harm the country’s independence and sovereignty.
Speaking at a media briefing yesterday regarding the government’s decision to transfer the rights to supply gas to the Yugadanavi power plant to an American company, MP Ranawaka said the Ministry of Finance entering such an agreement is a violation of the Constitution.
The Parliamentarian said Parliament was never informed of such an agreement adding, according to Article 148 of the Constitution, authority on reaching such an agreement falls with Parliament and not the subject Minister.
He added, according to Article 157, if an agreement is entered with a foreign entity or country, the approval of Parliament must be obtained.
MP Ranawaka said this deal is unconstitutional and lacks transparency adding they vehemently object to the government’s action.
He called on employees of the Ceylon Electricity Board, the country’s engineering community and the public to stand against this treacherous act.
