The Attorney General’s Department has informed the Special Permanent High Court-at-Bar that it will not proceed with the charges filed against Former Navy Commander Admiral of the Fleet Wasantha Karannagoda in relation to the 2008/2009 youth abduction case.
The case has been filed against 14 Sri Lanka Navy officers. The case was taken up this morning before a three-member bench comprising of Judges Champa Janaki Rajaratne, Amal Ranaraja and Navaratne Marasinghe.
Admiral of the Fleet Wasantha Karannagoda and 13 other naval officers have been charged in connection with the abduction and disappearance of 11 youths in Colombo for ransom during 2008-2009.
Appearing on behalf of the Attorney General, Senior State Counsel Janaka Bandara said in court today that he hopes to inform the Court of Appeal of the Attorney General’s decision.
The writ petition filed in relation to the case by Admiral of the Fleet Wasantha Karannagoda will be taken up at the Appeals Court on the 30th of August.
The High Court ordered Senior State Counsel Janaka Bandara to inform the decision of the Appeals Court in relation to the writ when the case is next heard before the bench on the 22nd of September.
