World Rabies Day is marked today under the theme “Rabies: Facts, not Fear”.
Director of the Public Health Veterinary Service of the Ministry of Health Dr. LD Kithsiri addressing a media briefing yesterday said children are at high risk of falling victim to rabies.
Dr. Kithsiri urged the public to vaccinate stray dogs before taking them home.
Dr. Kithsiri said the World Health Organisation has informed that human to human rabies transmission can be eradicated by 2025 adding steps have been taken to vaccinate stray dogs.
He said 70% of the population must be vaccinated adding however it was disrupted due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
Dr. Kithsiri said there is an increase in children contracting rabies from puppies adding awareness must be created.
