The World Bank has expressed deep concerns over the deteriorating situation in Sri Lanka, following clashes broke out in Colombo, where peaceful protestors came under attack by the pro-government supporters.

World Bank Country Director for the Maldives, Nepal, and Sri Lanka Faris H. Hadad-Zervos said, “We are deeply concerned with the perpetration of violence in Sri Lanka. Those responsible are only standing in the way of the country’s immediate economic recovery and making the task even more difficult for development partners.”

Meanwhile, the United States said it is closely monitoring the situation in Sri Lanka.

Issuing a statement, the Bureau of South and Central Asian Affairs of the US State Department said it is deeply concerned by the violence against peaceful protesters and innocent bystanders.

Several other foreign missions and diplomats in Sri Lanka also condemned the violent clashes that erupted yesterday in Colombo.
