Co-Cabinet Spokesman Minister Ramesh Pathirana says the government will not politically influence legal proceedings regarding the 2019 Easter Sunday attacks.
When inquired regarding the allegations levelled against the government by Archbishop of Colombo Cardinal Malcolm Ranjith pertaining to the attacks, Minister Pathirana said the Police and the Attorney General’s Department have been vested with all powers regarding legal proceedings into the bombings.
Minister Ramesh Pathirana said the President and government promised Cardinal Malcolm Ranjith to carry out the necessary legal action without any influence.
He noted the delay by the Attorney General’s Department to file the cases is due to the need to file the case in a stringent manner to ensure suspects do not go unpunished.
The Minister said several persons who were directly or indirectly involved in the attacks are in custody at present, while the Attorney General’s Department is working to file cases sufficiently.
