Businessman Dhammika Perera today informed the Supreme Court that he will not take oath as a Parliamentarian or a Minister until a verdict is issued pertaining to the Fundamental Rights petitions filed against him.
Perera informed Court of his decision when petitions filed against the businessman’s appointment as a Member of Parliament were taken up for consideration before a three-member bench comprising Justices Priyantha Jayawardena, Yasantha Kodagoda, and Arjuna Obeysekera this afternoon.
President’s Counsel Romesh de Silva, representing Dhammika Perera at the conclusion of the consideration, made this announcement.
Accordingly, further consideration of the petitions was adjourned for tomorrow.
Meanwhile, member of the Movement for a People’s Struggle Duminda Nagamuwa filed a Fundamental Rights petition before the Supreme Court today challenging the appointment of Dhammika Perera as a Member of Parliament for the seat left vacant following the resignation of Basil Rajapaksa as an MP.
The petitioner states that the appointment of the Dhammika Perera as an MP is in violation of the country’s Constitution and therefore calls for the decision to be revoked with immediate effect.
