The Ceylon Teachers Union says failure by the government to issue the circular pertaining to addressing salary anomalies of teachers and principals and the failure to provide the due salary by January will result in the resumption of trade union action.
Speaking to media in Kandy today Chief Secretary of the Union Joseph Stalin said the circular is yet to be issued.
Stalin said teachers and principals engaged in an extensive struggle for over 120 days, following which Rs.30 billion was approved through the 2022 Budget, to resolve teachers and principals’ salary anomalies.
He noted teachers and principal’s unions jointly called for it to be implemented by the 20th of January, 2022.
Stalin added in order for the salary to be provided, the relevant circular must be issued.
He said discussions were held with the Secretary to the Ministry of Education and the Additional Secretary, who claimed the circular will be issued in the future.
He stated in order to provide the salary, the proposal being passed through the Budget is not sufficient and the relevant circular must be issued.
He added it should be issued by the 5th of January.
Joseph Stalin said they informed the Education Secretary to issue the circular promptly while reiterating that failure to provide the salary by the 20th of January will result in trade union action being launched.
