Parliamentarian Patali Champika Ranawaka says his faction is prepared to take up responsibilities in an all-party interim government if the conditions they have put forth are fulfilled.
Speaking at a media briefing today, MP Ranawaka said an interim government is similar to the good governance government established in 2015 that will function during a specific time period and will be non-functional when Parliament is dissolved; a government similar to the one that enforced the 100-day programme in 2015.
However, the Parliamentarian charged that the government that exists now does not function in this capacity; and lacks a clear timeframe, action plan, and period of dissolution.
MP Ranawaka added there is uncertainty over the decision that will be taken in relation to the President as well.
The Parliamentarian reiterated that when Parliament convenes in June, the draft of the 21st Amendment to the Constitution must be tabled in Parliament as a Cabinet decision.
He stated that the Police, the state sector, and the National Election Commission must be independent.
MP Ranawaka also claimed that individuals holding citizenship in other countries must not be allowed to hold office in Sri Lanka, whether it be in the capacity of the President, Prime Minister, or a Member of Parliament.
He noted that they will fulfil duties diligently within an all-party interim government if these conditions are met.
On a separate note, MP Ranawaka also called for the appointment of a Parliamentary committee to inquire into whether foreign aid is being diligently put into use.
He said the aid must not be distributed for political activities and called for the Prime Minister to intervene and ensure this does not happen.
